Life In The Era of Social Distancing

Day #295 of Social Distancing – What a week.

What a week. We knew it was coming, but had hoped beyond fervent hope that it wouldn’t. I don’t know about you, but I watched, horrified, as a sitting president attempted a coup. There is so much to say about this that I don’t know where to begin.

The Ugly American and White Supremacy were on display and looting the nation’s sacred halls of government, at the invitation of the president. Had these insurrectionists been Black or brown, they would have been shot on sight. The Capitol steps would have been bathed in blood. The president’s toady at the DoD would not activate the National Guard at the request of the Maryland governor as the thugs breached chambers. It took three hours and a request from the vice president, after the Virginia National Guard came to the aid of the police. Remember when he replaced the staff at the DoD a few weeks ago and we couldn’t understand why in the last days of his term? Well, now we know.

Pence acted, late, while the Orange Menace watched the frenzy he had whipped up commence, safe in the Oval Office. Pence was angry, reports indicate. Wanna know why? Because his boss, whose boots he has been licking for four long years, told the mob that he wasn’t doing what they wanted, and the mob was coming for him to string him up. Did you see the noose they built? Yep, I’ll bet he was angry. Probably shit his pants when he realized the noose was for him. Yet, not angry enough to invoke the 25th to remove the bastard.

To be completely horrified all over again, watch this report from MSNBC’s Chris Hayes:  https://youtu.be/lhjRXO72v1s

So. Which is the better path, anyway? It’s unclear to me whether or not the 25th would strip the president of the ability to hold public office again. If not, then impeachment is the way to go. Anything to ensure the bloated grifter can never hold any public office to hold the nation hostage ever again. Frankly, while the jumpsuit color will clash with his spray tan, prison should be the next stop on that circus train.

And yet, the GOP ass-kissing opportunists, such as they are, are all now trying to disassociate themselves. After four years of denying regular people their rights, their livelihoods, their health and in many cases, their lives all while parroting the Grifter in Chief, these people really think we will forget their complicity with this attack on our democracy? I certainly will not.

Folks, there are so many people who bought the shit they were sold. And they remain in the market to buy more shit. And then they take that shit and set it on fire. Do we think the shit master will stop selling it? Doesn’t matter how many social media outlets shut it down, as long as there is a market, he will find a way to get the vile people their fix. It ain’t going away. The fabric of this nation has been woven with the shit from its inception.

As long as we understand this, and remain vigilant – we cannot at all think we’re in the clear – we can avoid what happened in Germany in the 1930s. If we think we can relax, even just a little bit, you can bet we can watch a repeat.

All that said, we have reason to be hopeful. People have become more interested and better educated about how government and politics work. The desire to protect this great experiment has become fervent in the face of this trashing of every tenet we have held dear.

May we remain vigilant as we repair the destruction of the last four years.
