Sunday morning. I’m writing this post on my phone this morning, sitting at my friend’s kitchen table in frigid New England. Her dogs are snoring (well, one of them is) and the only humans awake are me and the child I am depositing here for a college reboot.
It was an exciting proposition, as we planned and prepared and got him enrolled and registered in a matter of weeks, all coming down to the wire. He begins classes tomorrow, and moved into his new room with his new family yesterday.
Now, I am sad. I know this is an important milestone in a person’s life, leaving home for the first time, learning to live with others that you’re not related to. I hope that this will be a good experience for him and he will begin to find his way.
It is the end of an era, and the beginning of my youngest child’s adulthood. Is this why mothers cry when they drop their children off at college for the first time?
Late update: cried the entire drive home and even after arriving home, when the weight of the leaving behind stayed with me.
