Today was my birthday, World Autism Awareness Day, Light It Up Blue…. As per usual, I am pleased to not be required to wear blue today. Even so, it wound up being the focal point of the day; walking down memory lane virtually with all the members of the Autism Speaks family. Numerous social media posts that included photos of all of my former colleagues from the humble beginnings to the global reach of the message and movement – through the collective good work of all of these fine people.
My oldest, with best of intentions, wanted to get take out from our favorite place for dinner. Although a web search made it appear open, when I called to order dinner, the phone rang and rang and rang. Plan B went into full effect: burgers, fries and ultimately, cake. He had bought a birthday cake for the family, and my daughter and I made an almond cake with butter cream frosting from scratch. We were all disappointed, but the burgers were delicious.
Nature chimed in, too, with an amazingly beautiful sunset to cap it all off. For a day spent reflecting on the year (years, to be honest) past and setting intentions for the next one, this was the Universe’s gift to me.
