A Washington Post article by Dr. Zack Cooper, associate professor at the Yale School of Public Health and Yale’s Economics Department, says that we do, in fact, have the ability to test at the rate of 20 million tests a day, which is what experts say we need in order to reopen the economy safely. But the rub is that it would cost about $250 billion, and there has not, so far, been sufficient political will to spend that kind of money on testing, especially when those most affected by the reopening of states have been poor Americans and workers who are disproportionately people of color. The administration’s response to the coronavirus crisis is nothing short of genocide.
I listened to Governor Cuomo’s address for the first time in a few days. This is what government response should look and sound like. While I don’t recall his sentiments word for word, he made sure to emphasize that economic recovery does not take precedence over human life. There is no choice between the economy and public health – they go together and we cannot have an effective economic recovery without first securing the public’s health. New York’s reliance of facts and data have ensured that their curve is on a downward trend, albeit a slow one. The rest of America is a raging inferno in comparison. And no one is expendable, at least not in New York. The state government is bringing upstate farmers together with downstate food banks and other food distributors to the most vulnerable. It’s not perfect, but it keeps the farmers in business and keeps families from going hungry.
This is how a government should serve its people during a crisis.
Then there was the effort to discredit Dr. Fauci by a couple of Trump loyalists. Apparently, a couple of guys paid a woman to accuse the good doctor of sexual misconduct. (Anthony Fauci? Seriously? The dude never stops working; when would he have time?)
What is up in this country? A black person, usually a black man, cannot do ANYTHING anyone else can do without fear of losing his life. Innocent black men and women are literally murdered for living their lives. It feels like this is reaching a crescendo. This shit has GOT TO STOP. Anyone who tells the truth, might want to suss out the truth, or possibly restore some dignity to society, gets smeared with a sexual misconduct accusation. Apparently, that’s way more effective in the US than the Russian method of quieting truth-tellers through drops from open windows.
And yet, the Orange One-Man Crime Spree continues to gut our democracy from the inside and commits mass genocide every day that there is no coordinated response.
