Yesterday began like most other days (though I did not get enough sleep and I was freaking tired): wake up, drink coffee, exercise, journal, drink more coffee, check in with best friend, shower, get to work.
The kids and I were expecting to have dinner from Hot Wok Cafe last night – postponed from its original date of Sunday. Around 1:30 or so, I mentioned to Geoff that he should shower, which he began to do around 3 pm. I had an afternoon filled with Zoom meetings, and I was at the start of one when I heard someone yelling my name.
I left my Zoom meeting to find my son, dripping wet and naked, gripping his lower left side and moaning that it hurt so bad that he could not shower. I sprang into action – told my colleagues that I would be taking the kid to either the ER or urgent care and hopped off the meeting, got on the phone to the pediatrician to determine where he should go while he dried himself off and threw clothes on. Thankfully, I had the presence of mind to grab the insurance card off of his bedside table. After about five minutes of back and forth with the pediatric nurse while my uber-pale child looked as though he was going to pass out from the pain, we were in the car on the way to the ER. Pediatrician thinks it’s a kidney stone, get it checked out.
By the time we entered the ER, his pain had gone from about a 7 down to a 2. But then, back to 7 again. This went on for about the first half hour we were there. Within an hour, he’d been inspected but nothing more. After 2 hours, he had a blood draw, a urine sample, and a CAT scan of his abdominal cavity. After 3 hours, anything more serious than a miniscule kidney stone had been ruled out, and he was looking and feeling a lot better. By the fourth hour, we were on our way home. We had a few calls to make to very concerned people, but he and I were both exhausted and hungry. After feeding our faces (having postponed Hot Wok yet again), we both had to lay down. I’m not sure about him, but I was asleep before 9 pm and did not open my eyes until the alarm went off this morning.
That was our little adventure.
One of my colleagues had her washing machine flood the main floor of her house, another had to call poison control because one of his children might have swallowed an Aleve, another has a toilet that neither flushes or fills, another who is about to have her third child has no air conditioning and her refrigerator is not working…and Mercury doesn’t go retrograde until two days from now! What in the world was happening yesterday???
Did Mercury get a jump on its antics thanks to a full moon? I mean, seriously.
On the bright side, a dear friend became a grandmother yesterday for the first time. So there’s that.
Haha- very entertaining. Glad Geoff is ok.
