Life In The Era of Social Distancing

Day # 438 – I just ate an entire pint of ice cream

It’s Friday night in my house, which can mean a lot of things. This particular Friday night, we ordered take out Chinese food and had a raucous evening with all of the children plus one.

It also means we break our week-long wine fast and have at least two bottles during dinner. So now we look like lushes. But wait! After dinner drinks do happen, too, so there is that.

Which means that by the time I am writing this, I am rather loose.

It was incredibly pleasant to have all of my children at the table together, along with a significant other of one of the kids. There was a lot of joshing with one another, which, I have to say, was actually a bit of fun to witness. They are kind of brutal, but cognizant of each others’ feelings as they are brutalizing one another. It’s a tender kind of tearing-down that they do – not ever meant to hurt, but to check one another – to ensure that each knows the others’ limitations.

The adults remain responsible for their own issues.

We ate and drank and witnessed our kids interacting like young adults. What an evening!

But then, the magic was over, everyone went to their separate corners, and we were abruptly forced back into our own reality.

And then it happened: I pulled the pint of ice cream out of the freezer. That was it. Another ten minutes and it was gone. Forget self-control. Forget counting carbs or calories. Forget accountability, even! The pint is gone, my stomach is making gurgling noises, and I will likely spend a great deal of tomorrow morning on the toilet.

Oy vey, I should know better. I should. But I am a creature of habit – I will commune with my fellow creatures when the time is right.

In the meantime, I will try not to eat the entire pint again.
