Life In The Era of Social Distancing

Day #746 – Give yourself some grace.

We made it through February, approaching a full two years since we were dealt the blow of a global pandemic. It still rages on, morphing and changing, while we attempt to adjust our notion of normalcy.

Humanitarian crises exist all over the globe and a war in Europe, perpetrated by a madman with nukes, add to the weight of all that people carry. Not where an entire globe of emotionally exhausted people want to be in this moment.

But people and their follies be damned.

Seasons change whether humans do the right thing for one another or not. The earth continues to go on, with or without us.

Crocus are blooming. Birds are singing. Soon, the forsythia will begin to bud. Trees will awaken from their winter slumber to remind us that life does indeed go on.

Where am I going with this?

Life is hard. People we love die and we are faced with going on without them. We have complicated relationships with others, and we have to learn how to navigate their presence in our lives. We search for meaning in how we show up in the world and come up empty-handed more often than we’d like. We believe the best in people until we are disappointed.

And yet.

The sun rises, the day dawns, and if we are among the lucky, we awake to greet another day. We are given the grace of another chance to do the next right thing in our own lives.

Life is hard. But it is made easier by the ones we love, the friends we make, the people we help without knowing.

Be kind to yourself today. We made it through February in the second full year of a global pandemic while madmen are wreaking havoc and destruction.

Every day is an achievement. Give yourself grace.
