Life In The Era of Social Distancing

Day #10 of Social Distancing & Lessons in Gratitude

It’s a full ten days in – with at least another 30 to 40 to go – and the kids have completely adapted to online classes and schoolwork. Amazingly, they seem to be actually completing their work in record time. Evenings are spent online socializing (truthfully, that happens throughout the day, I just am busy so I am not as aware.)

Family dinners are actually family dinners. The explosions of emotions from yesterday seem to have dissipated. We talk to one another at the dinner table now. This evening, we talked about NY Governor Andrew Cuomo and his daily addresses – how people from all over the U.S. are tuning in to him to get facts and updates. Even people who don’t like Cuomo are taking comfort in his daily sharing of facts about the progress of the virus in NY and what his administration is doing about it. Perhaps it’s a function of no other distraction, but the children are reading about what’s happening and have opinions to share. Among the many things I am grateful for, this is one.

So much of what we are now doing will be the norm for some time to come. I take comfort in that I have internet access, am able to work and to “socialize” just as the kids do. I’m grateful for how connected I am with people who are doing exactly as I am. We unite over Facebook and LinkedIn, commiserating over the new WFH trials and tribulations, children taking classes from their bedrooms. Just as the flowers are blooming and the trees are budding, we are forced to stop and really see it, view it, savor it. To find our gratitude in the dawn of every new day and each time we count our blessings for our health. Especially for our health.

That’s what’s happening here on day #10. What are you most grateful for today?

Stay healthy, stay safe.
