Life In The Era of Social Distancing

Day #111 of Social Distancing – Summer of 2020 part 1.0

We have survived July 4th, have one child successfully registered for fall classes and another who will complete registration in 2 weeks. Taxes are coming due soon, and dental bills have already arrived in the mail. Details require attention.

We’re awaiting an announcement from one school about whether or not all classes will be remote. If they are, the campus move-in day will be postponed until the spring semester for that child. What a bummer. The cost of the dorm room for the purpose of taking classes via computer doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. (And now that he is actually registered, has said he wishes he could take a gap year. Go figure. If we could send him to Greece for his gap year, that could be an option. But that is off the table, too.) The other child is expected to have hybrid classes and will be living on campus. I’m guessing the endowment is not large enough to absorb another bout of entirely remote students.

It’s difficult to fathom what we will all be forced to endure in the coming months as the nation’s health crisis rages out of control. It is strikingly similar to the stream of idiocy that flows forth from the Orange Menace. And now, Kanye West is trying to co-opt the presidential race? Really? Just who does he think will vote for him? He’s as big a buffoon as the idiot friend he has that squats in the White House. People, do not get distracted! I told you this would happen! Look away from the twin train wrecks! Focus your gaze forward! We have a nation to repair! A global reputation to restore! Millions of people hurting that need help. None of this will fix itself and if we don’t take care of this now, I don’t think we will have a nation. Period.

There is no respite, not at the moment. We need solutions, not racist diatribes. We need a coordinated, national plan, not divisiveness.  We need people who understand that it’s their job to uphold and protect the Constitution and the rights of all citizens walking the halls of government, not these greedy, racist, fascist lackeys and charlatans. I feel as though the entire nation is holding its breath, waiting for the next stupid thing to happen, the next absolute calamity to befall us while Cheeto Satan shrugs his shoulders and goes off to his golf course. I wish he would resign already. Let Pence pardon him of his crimes against the United States of America. The state of New York has some interesting accommodations they’re interested in showing him, I am sure. Did anyone wonder the real reason 45 changed his state of permanent residence to Florida? Was it because he was mad at Cuomo or DiBlasio? Nope. Think again. The state of New York will have to extradite him from Florida to serve time for crimes in that state. And Florida has been bought and paid for by the supporters of the one-man crime wave. Our equally corrupt AG is ensuring that the escape routes for his mob boss are clear, even as he sets up scenarios for re-election. They all need to go to jail. Every last one of them.

How do we move on with our lives when leaving the house is a health risk? When meeting with friends is a clandestine endeavor? How can our kids have a normal life if everywhere they turn, their normal is restricted and reduced? How do we expect the people who were already on the edge to survive?

Every day, I give thanks for my blessings and pray for others to be blessed. It doesn’t stop the frustration or the anger, but it does help to ground me. We have a home, we have work, we have food, our family is healthy. I have the luxury of being incensed by world events while not being victimized by them.

May we all survive to see a new day dawn, for hope to lift us out of this cesspool we are in.
